Top 5 Independent Coffee Shops: London

London is one of the world’s greatest cities. It is widely renowned for its incredible range of restaurants, bars and tourist attractions, and of course, its brilliant coffee scene.

There is no shortage of high quality specialty coffee spots in London, so many that you might feel spoiled for choice. But have no fear, that’s what we’re here for.

We’ve selected five of the best spots we’d highly recommend for any coffee enthusiast.

The Attendant – Fitzrovia:

What was formerly a Victorian men’s bathroom in Fitzrovia has now been lovingly transformed into one of London’s best specialty coffee and brunch cafes.

This unique location upcycled their Doulton & Co porcelain urinals into stylish, quirky seating to match the intact original Victorian floor tiles.

The Attendant have their own seasonal espresso blends direct from the Attendant Roastery and can serve it to you in any way you feel like. They even sell their beans and brewing equipment for you to take home and recreate their coffees.

Whether popping in for a coffee at their espresso bar, or going the full nine yards for one of the best brunches London has to offer, your visit to The Attendant will certainly be one to remember!

Allpress Espresso Bar – Shoreditch:

Allpress began on Redchurch Street as the brand’s first coffee roastery in 2010, finding themselves their perfect eclectic community in the heart of shoreditch.

Eventually, the company moved their roastery to Dalston, but just couldn’t say goodbye to their shoreditch location, so now they serve their signature blends from a small espresso bar.

Having their roastery so close by allows them to serve fresh, specialty coffee on the daily, with the intention of every customer leaving satisfied.

Whether you go into Allpress for a rest, an on the go refreshment, or a bag of beans to brew at home, you’ll definitely leave a happy customer.

Ground Control – Angel:

Home of the Ethiopian Coffee Company, Ground Control are committed to serving amazing coffee, along with amazing food.

Ensuring they source all of their own coffees, ECC’s coffee is roasted in small batches on a daily basis to guarantee freshness for all of their customers.

Where possible they import directly from Ethiopia and visit their suppliers on a regular basis, buying in small lots and micro-lots so their beans are always the current season’s crop.

It is clear that from bean to cup, the ECC and Ground Control put passion and care into everything they do.

We’d definitely recommend a trip to Islington to pay them a visit!

Monmouth Coffee Company – Covent Garden:

In bustling Covent Garden, sits the Monmouth Coffee Company. Inside: a rustic, cosy atmosphere where you can sample some of the best coffee London has to offer.

Monmouth boasts their in-depth knowledge of curating coffee and an extensive understanding of how to source the best the world can give. From starting out roasting coffee in their basement, it is clear their passion for beans has paid off, and it shows in every drop they brew.

They offer coffee to stay, coffee to go, and both whole-bean and ground coffee to take home, along with all of the home-brewing necessities, so there really is something for everyone here.

If you don’t plan to visit Covent Garden, do not fret. Monmouth also have a store in Borough Market.

Jacob the Angel – Covent Garden:

The perfect definition of a hidden gem, Jacob the Angel is nestled away in Neal’s Yard, a location which has recently become one of London’s most instagrammable locations.

Boasting a beautiful interior and even more stunning outside courtyard, this cafe offer incredible coffee, and a wide array of pastries, cakes, and Middle Eastern style bakery items.

Serving artisan coffees from London’s Square Mile roastery, this iconic coffee house is not one to be missed. And, with talks of them relocating in the near future, there has never been a better time to visit their cosy nook in the heart of Neal’s Yard.

Note: All of the coffee shops mentioned offer dietary alternatives including dairy free milks, etc. However, it is worth checking in advance if you do have any allergies or intolerances, to ensure they are able to cater for you.

Have you been to these coffee shops, or any others in London you feel are worth a mention? If so, we’d love to hear from you! We’re always interested in what other bean-heads have to recommend!
