Nando’s: Bringing heat to your plate, not the planet

As week two of COP26 is well underway, popular chicken chain Nandos appears to have followed suit with leaders around the world and recently pledged to become “Net Zero” by the year 2030.

This means that the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere is the same as the amount being removed. So, a company or individual who is “net zero” is not personally contributing to global warming.

This announcement comes only a few years after the company, famous for its PERi-PERi style chicken dishes, pledged to become Carbon Neutral by November 2021. Something they have impressively succeeded in doing.

Since 2015, the chain has managed to reduce their carbon footprint by 40%. And, though they still have some emissions that are simply unavoidable, the company has worked hard to offset these emissions through a number of carbon offsetting projects around the globe.

In a public statement released on their facebook page, the firm said:

“Becoming carbon neutral is only a small part of the journey we are on to reach our existing Science Based Target. “

“We’re changing how we do things around here to reduce the carbon footprint of the average meal by almost 50% by 2030.”

While this target to many may seem unfeasible, Nandos have already proven that it is possible to become carbon neutral, and have also gone about ensuring their target is backed by the Science Based Targets initiative

The company claims they are due to begin more offsetting projects this year in order to continue the balance of their carbon footprint. With a number of these projects being based in their founding country of South Africa.

Further to their press statement, in a more detailed run down of their efforts featured on their website, the company also stated:

“As we continue to work to reduce our emissions, we’ll be reporting on our progress and sharing our roadmap to get Net Zero too.”

As if not enough, the company also made statements about their intended efforts to improve animal welfare, as well as do their bit to tackle deforestation.

Further details and information can be found on the Nando’s website.
