With the rise in social media and the increase of “FOMO”, seeing the world is becoming higher on many of our to-do lists. It is clear this generation wants to do it all – but are budgets still stopping us?
Travelling is often thought of an expensive affair, and with the cost of living rising, but wages staying the same, a lot of people simply cannot afford to spend the extra money on a trip away, when it could so easily be spent on something more crucial.
In my opinion that shouldn’t have to be something that stops people from seeing the world. Travelling is one of the most beneficial things you can do and everyone should have the opportunity to do it – even if it’s on a budget. Here’s how to get the most for your money, and still have an amazing trip.
First off… accommodation:
The first point of call when booking a trip should always be accommodation. Making sure you have a place to stay when you arrive is paramount to ensuring your safety on your trip. Sort that out first, and travel second. For those on a tight budget, consider staying in hostels. They usually offer more affordable lodging, particularly if you’re willing to share with friends or fellow travellers. There are often multiple options including same-sex dorm rooms, but also private rooms. While some of these options are pricier, they may make your stay feel more secure and comfortable. Try hostelworld.com for the top hostel recommendations in the area you’re travelling to. If hostels aren’t your cup of tea, a lot of countries have a number of chain budget hotels such as Holiday Inn or Ibis where you can often grab a room for a low cost. Airbnb is another fantastic option. With their services, you can find a variety of unique accommodations that are easy on your wallet. Don’t forget, if there are quite a few of you to split the bill, you’ll get it a hell of a lot cheaper, giving you a lot more to spend once you arrive.

Next up… travel:
The key to getting to your destination cheap as chips is to know the best time to travel. Try to avoid travelling around holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas, and avoid school holidays where possible. Check online for the public holidays in the place you’re travelling to. If you can, consider travelling midweek, as travel is more expensive on weekends. Travelling as off peak as you possibly can has the potential to save you hundreds. Not only that, your destination is less likely to be inundated with people if you go when everyone else is at home!
If flying is the only way to get where you’re going, consider a budget airline. Airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair offer flights to certain cities for as little as £20 each way. As well, many other airlines including British Airways, Virgin, etc have sales and discounts on their flights throughout the year. Especially helpful if you’re travelling further afield. Make use of these sales when they’re on and you could save a lot. Other sites such as Skyscanner and other similar concepts can compare all flights to your destination and give you advice on where is cheapest without you having to file through airline after airline.
If you don’t mind a longer, less luxury journey, travel by train or bus can quite often be a cheap alternative to flying, particularly when travelling in Europe. Consider looking into Flixbus and other cross-channel coach companies for a journey on a tight budget. Or, if travelling to more than one destination on your travels is something you’re interested in, have a look in to Interrailing which is now super easy to access through the Trainline app.

So you’re there, now what?
For best value eating out on your travels, try exploring a local market for fresh food and small eateries. Somewhere like La Boqueira in Barcelona, Europe’s largest food market, is the perfect place to grab good food for an even better price. Or, if you’re in a group, consider heading to a local supermarket and cooking something up at your accommodation. Quick, tasty bites can often be made for a low price and hostels and Airbnb locations almost always provide kitchen facilities of some sort.

To entertain yourself, try to visit as many free attractions or landmarks that you can in your destination. Check out where the Queen of England lives, see Notre Dame or explore Central Park. Visit one of the world’s famous museums, art galleries or libraries. There are usually plenty things to do for free in big cities, and a quick Google search will provide you with an extensive list. Many popular travel destinations also offer city tours at discount prices. Giving those who’d rather see a location with the help of an expert the opportunity to experience a destination without breaking the bank. Or, if you find yourself somewhere more remote, try asking a local what’s around, or just go exploring. There’s so many incredible sights to see all over the world, and you never know what’s around the corner unless you look
Sticking to a budget on your travels is important. But just make sure you’re resourceful and not exceeding your limits too much (especially not in the beginning) and there’s no reason why you can’t have the time of your life on your adventures.
Travelling can be the best time of your life, even on a budget. So go out there and enjoy yourself, you absolutely deserve it.
